Allowances

In addition to basic pay, Service member may also receive allowance to offset various expenses connected to military service. Allowances can comprise a significant portion of a Service member's total pay. An additional key benefit of allowances is that the majority of them are not taxed, meaning Service members can utilize the full value of their allowance. 

  •  BAH is designed to offset a Service member's housing costs when government-provided housing is not available.
  •  BAS is designed to offset the cost of food for enlisted Service members. It is not designed to offset the cost of food for dependents.
  • BNA is a monthly allowance given to qualified military families whose income falls below certain Federal guidelines.
  •  Clothing allowances may be issued to help members pay for their uniforms.
  •  DLA is designed to partially reimburse a Service member expenses incurred during a PCS, a move ordered for the Government's convenience, or due to an evacuation.
  •  FSA is designed to address extra expenses that occur when a Service member is involuntarily separated from their dependents. 

 FSSA is designed to assist with costs experienced by Service members with dependents when serving overseas.
