Eligibility to opt into BRS for the National Guard and Reserve is based on retirement points, not years of service, like the active duty. National Guard and Reserve service members in a paid status, who have accrued fewer than 4,320 retirement points as of December 31, 2017, may choose to opt into the BRS. However, eligibility for continuation pay is based on years of service. Remembers retirement points for eligibility, but years of service for continuation pay.
