Equipping the force with military compensation education

BBP Logo

Background

Military compensation is more than a paycheck. From health care and housing allowances to retirement benefits, tax advantages, education support and family programs, military service offers a broad package of financial and quality-of-life benefits that can support Service members throughout their careers and beyond.

While military compensation remains competitive with the civilian sector, many Service members do not fully recognize or understand the combined value of pay, allowances, health care, retirement benefits, educational assistance, and quality-of-life support. This gap in awareness can lead to underused resources, missed opportunities and misunderstandings about the true value of military service.

The #BeyondBasicPay campaign is designed to:

  • Increase awareness of the full value of military compensation.
  • Help Service members and families better understand available benefits and support programs.
  • Encourage informed financial and career decisions.
  • Strengthen connections between compensation, readiness and long-term opportunity.
  • Support conversations that reinforce the value of military service.

Overview

Know the Value of Military Service

#BeyondBasicPay demonstrates the true value of military service by highlighting the full spectrum of compensation such as pay, benefits, support systems, and everything that strengthens Service members and their families. This toolkit equips service providers, military leaders, partners, and media with clear, compelling resources to help them communicate the real impact of the total military compensation package.

Call To Action

  • Help amplify the message that military compensation is more than basic pay. Share resources, start conversations and encourage Service members and families to explore and better understand the benefits available to them.

  • Watch this video* for a quick look at how the Department of War is elevating the real impact of military benefits all year long.

Together, pay and allowances, health care, retirement benefits, education opportunities, and quality of life resources form a comprehensive compensation package built to support Service members and their families at every stage of military life. #BeyondBasicPay will:

  • Expand the definition: Military compensation is more than a paycheck. It includes both direct pay and valuable non-monetary benefits that may not always be visible or fully understood.
  • Make compensation relatable: Better understanding military compensation will help Service members make informed decisions about finances, career planning, education, and family goals.Understanding the full value of military compensation helps Service members and their families see the broader opportunities connected to military service.
  • Prompt exploration: Increased awareness and use of available benefits can contribute to financial well-being, mission readiness and long-term stability. Service providers, leaders, partners, and trusted voices play an important role in helping military communities access and understand available resources.

Option 1:  Curious what your realmilitary compensation looks like? Your Regular Military Compensation is the foundation of your military pay –Basic Pay, BAS, and BAH. Take a minute to calculate it and share with someone who could use the clarity.
Option 2: Not sure how RMC fits in with what you see on your LES? Your LES shows your monthly pay activity. Your RMC shows the bigger picture of your total compensation and benefits. Two tools, two different jobs —both worth understanding. Drop your questions in the comments.
Option 3: Ever wonder why BAH isn’t the same for everyone? It comes down to a simple formula: Rank + Dependency Status + ZIP Code = Your BAH. Rates shift because housing costs shift, and the system adjusts to match your local market. Check your exact BAH rate using the official lookup tool below.#BeyondBasicPay (graphic of the website: https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/)
LinkedIn (leaders & service providers)
Option 1: Your LES shows your monthly pay activity. Your RMC shows the full value of your compensation —including Basic Pay, BAH and BAS—so you understand the total investment the military makes in you. If you want to strengthen financial readiness across your formation, start using the RMC calculator during counselingsand have those hard financial conversations. It’s one of the fastest ways to build confidence, clarity, and trust.(media forthcoming)#BeyondBasicPay
Option 2: Leaders: Your team shouldn’t be guessing their BAH. Rank + Dependency Status + ZIP Code = Their rate and the official calculator does the rest. Use it during counselings, financial readiness sessions, or unit in-processing to give your Service members accurate, up-to-date information they can act on. Save this resource and share it with your peers so they can walk Service members through the process. Basic Allowance for Housing | BAH | Defense Travel Management Office#BeyondBasicPay
Option 3: Leaders, BAS is one of the most misunderstood entitlements across the force and it doesn’t need to be. Here’s a simple way to frame it during counseling:
“BAS isn’t meant to feed your family —it’s designed to offset the cost of yourfood as a Service member. It’s a flat monthly allowance, not tied to dependents, and it supports individual readiness by ensuring you can meet basic nutritional needs.” Use this explanation to help Service members understand why BAS exists, why it’s structured the way it is, and how it fits into their overall compensation picture. If you want to build stronger financial readiness across your unit, make BAS part of your routine pay discussions and ensure your fellow leaders can explain it just as clearly.
Instagram (younger)
Option 1: Your basic pay is just the starting point. Your RMC adds BAH, BAS, tax advantages + more to show your realearning power. Save this post, hit the RMC calculator in the link in bio, and tag a friend who needs this.
Option 2: Why does BAH change from installation to installation? It’s literally a formula: Rank + Dependency Status + ZIP Code = Your BAH. Different places = different housing costs = different rates. Want to see YOUR number? Tap the link in bio and run your BAH lookup. (graphic of the website: https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/)
Option 3: Your readiness starts with fueling you—and that’s exactly what BAS is built for. BAS was never designed to feed your whole family. It’s a flat monthly allowancemeant to help youcover the cost of your own meals as a Service member. Not based on dependents. It exists for one reason: your individual readiness. You can’t perform, train, or recover if you’re not fueling your body. BAS helps make sure you can meet your basic nutritional needs so you can do your job and stay mission-ready. If you’ve ever wondered why BAS works the way it does —this video breaks it down in under a minute.-Watch the video-Share it with your battle buddies-Drop your questions in the comments. Let’s make sure everyone understands the benefits they earn.
X (leaders)
Option 1: Why does BAH change from installation to installation? Because it’s formula-driven: Rank + Dependency Status + ZIP Code = Your BAH. Different locations = different housing markets = different rates. Leaders: point your teams to the official BAH lookup so they’re working with real numbers, not rumors.”
Official BAH Lookup: https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/
Option 2: Talking about military pay doesn’t mean overhyping it. Stick to the facts: your LES shows monthly pay activity, and your RMC reflects the full value of compensation —including BAH, BAS, and tax advantages. Be clear, be honest, and point your people to the tools that give them real numbers, not guesses.Encourage your teams to use the RMC and BAH calculators during counseling so every Service member gets accurate, transparent information.(leader tip graphic)

LinkedIn (leaders & service providers)
Option 1: Military compensation is a strategic readiness issue. Military compensation is competitive, but many Service members do not fully recognize the combined value of pay, allowances, health care, retirement benefits, education assistance, and quality-of-life programs. Leaders and service providers: Learn more about the full value of military compensation and amplify the conversation. Help improve awareness and understanding by connecting Service members with trusted resources.
Option 2: Education drives engagement. Engagement drives informed decision-making.
Military compensation extends beyond basic pay to include allowances, health care, retirement benefits, educational assistance, and family support programs that contribute to overall readiness and quality of life. By increasing awareness of these benefits, leaders and service providers can help Service members better understand the full value of military service. Share one strategy you use to reinforce understanding of benefits.
Option 3: Silence ≠ understanding. Many Service members won't raise questions about pay, benefits, or financial concerns unless they're asked directly. That doesn't mean they fully understand their military compensation or the resources available to them. A simple conversation can identify misunderstandings, connect Service members to resources, and reinforce the value of the compensation and benefits they've earned. This week, commit to one proactive financial check-in. The conversation could make a meaningful difference.

X (leaders)
Option 1: Compensation only supports readiness when Service members understand it.
Military pay is more than a paycheck. Benefits, allowances, health care, retirement, and education opportunities all contribute to readiness. Leaders: Reinforce the value of military compensation in plain language.
Option 2: 74% of Service members live off the installation. When communicating about military compensation, consider the real-world financial decisions Service members and families face every day, from housing and transportation to child care and education. Make your messaging relevant to where they live.
Option 3: A well-informed force is a more resilient force. Assuming Service members understand all the components of their military compensation can leave critical questions unanswered –and benefits unused. Leaders play a key role in helping Service members understand the resources available to them. Take time to review financial literacy touchpoints and identify opportunities to reinforce key information.

Ready-to-Send Email

A ready-to-send email* (aka ghost email or GEM) that partners can send to their organization announcing the campaign to their network.

[Salutation],
Service members often have limited visibility into the full scope of their total compensation, creating a notable disconnect between the actual value of military pay and benefits, historically shown to meet or exceed comparable civilian compensation, and the value they perceive.
To bridge this knowledge gap, I want to share an initiative you’ll be seeing more of throughout the year: The Military Compensation Education Campaign, #BeyondBasicPay.
This initiative is focused on one simple idea: military compensation is more than basic pay. It includes allowances, tax advantages, healthcare, retirement, education benefits, and non-monetary support systems designed to provide a financial foundation, as well as long-term financial stability.
The Military Compensation Education Campaign intends to close the knowledge gap by:
• Highlighting the full value of compensation beyond basic pay
• Breaking down complex topics into clear, actionable information
• Helping Service members and their families make more informed financial decisions
Campaign content will highlight the value of the following key topics:
• Everyday support like housing, healthcare, and reduced out-of-pocket costs
• Long-term financial strength through retirement and educational assistance
• Support across every stage of military life
• Non-monetary benefits that strengthen quality of life for Service members and families
As a trusted voice, you play an important role in helping others understand and use these benefits effectively. I encourage you to explore the resources as they roll out and share them with those you support.
#BeyondBasicPay is about making sure all audiences can clearly see and fully understand what’s already available to Service members and their families. In the coming months, you’ll receive tools and materials to use in your own conversations and communities.
Respectfully,
