Director, Office of Military Compensation and Financial Readiness

Thank you for your continued support of the #BeyondBasicPay campaign.

This month, we are highlighting education, upskilling, and career pathways. These earned benefits help Service members and military spouses lower education costs, build technical skills, earn credentials, and prepare for long-term career success during and after military service.  This month’s focus also includes Project Patriot Pipeline (P3), which connects audiences to career development programs and opportunities.

Our core message is simple: Use the benefits you’ve earned to invest in what comes next.

You can help by sharing campaign materials through your organizations, units, newsletters, professional networks, and social channels. Please also encourage Service members and spouses to explore career and education resources at https://www.mypatriotcareer.mil/. In addition, please follow @DoDFINRED on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and X.

Together, we can help our Service members and families maximize their full compensation package to build a secure, mission-ready future.

Background

Military compensation is more than a paycheck. From health care and housing allowances to retirement benefits, tax advantages, education support and family programs, military service offers a broad package of financial and quality-of-life benefits that can support Service members throughout their careers and beyond.

While military compensation remains competitive with the civilian sector, many Service members do not fully recognize or understand the combined value of pay, allowances, health care, retirement benefits, educational assistance, and quality-of-life support. This gap in awareness can lead to underused resources, missed opportunities and misunderstandings about the true value of military service.

The #BeyondBasicPay campaign is designed to:

  • Increase awareness of the full value of military compensation.
  • Help Service members and families better understand available benefits and support programs.
  • Encourage informed financial and career decisions.
  • Strengthen connections between compensation, readiness and long-term opportunity.
  • Support conversations that reinforce the value of military service.

Overview

Know the Value of Military Service

#BeyondBasicPay demonstrates the true value of military service by highlighting the full spectrum of compensation such as pay, benefits, support systems, and everything that strengthens Service members and their families. This toolkit equips service providers, military leaders, partners, and media with clear, compelling resources to help them communicate the real impact of the total military compensation package.

Call To Action

  • Help amplify the message that military compensation is more than basic pay. Share resources, start conversations and encourage Service members and families to explore and better understand the benefits available to them.
  • Access social media and other assets for use on your platforms and direct Service members to https://militarypay.defense.gov/Compensation-Education/.
  • Watch this video* for a quick look at how the Department of War is elevating the real impact of military benefits all year long.

Objectives

This year-long educational campaign elevates the true value of military service by showcasing everything that goes beyond basic pay. Together, pay and allowances, health care, retirement benefits, education opportunities, and quality of life resources form a comprehensive compensation package built to support Service members and their families at every stage of military life. #BeyondBasicPay will:

  • Expand the definition: Military compensation is more than a paycheck. It includes both direct pay and valuable non-monetary benefits that may not always be visible or fully understood.
  • Make compensation relatable: Better understanding military compensation will help Service members make informed decisions about finances, career planning, education, and family goals.Understanding the full value of military compensation helps Service members and their families see the broader opportunities connected to military service.
  • Prompt exploration: Increased awareness and use of available benefits can contribute to financial well-being, mission readiness and long-term stability. Service providers, leaders, partners, and trusted voices play an important role in helping military communities access and understand available resources.
