Nonmonetary Benefits

Service members and their families have access to a wide range of nonmonetary benefits that strengthen well-being, provide stability, and support their everyday needs. These resources improve quality of life, promote readiness, and build community, creating a dependable foundation that supports them throughout the military journey.

BASIC PAY

Basic pay is the main component of a Service member's compensation. The amount is determined by grade and years of service. Basic pay is a taxable income, with potential exceptions if serving in a designated combat zone.

BASIC ALLOWANCE FOR HOUSING (BAH)

BAH is money provided to Service members stationed in the U.S. for fair housing compensation. As an allowance, BAH is not considered part of a Service member's pay and, due to that, is not taxed.

BASIC ALLOWANCE FOR SUBSISTENCE (BAS)

BAS is meant to offset the cost of food for Service members, not family members. The BAS rate is adjusted annually based upon the percentage increase of the price of food as identified by the USDA.

FEDERAL INCOME TAX ADVANTAGE

Specific components of military pay offer built-in tax advantages. Most allowances are tax-exempt and certain hardship circumstances can change normally taxable pay into tax-exempt. Military spouses have multiple tax treatment options for their earned income and Service member can access free tax preparation and filing support from military-tax specialists.

The Uniformed Services offers retirement options for Service members depending on their date of initial entry into military services (DIEMS) and whether they opted into the Blended Retirement System (BRS), which offers the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) retirement product

OTHER ALLOWANCES

Service member may receive various allowances to offset expenses connected to military service, including overseas housing, clothing, dislocation, and family separation. The majority of allowances are not taxed, meaning Service members can utilize the full value of their allowance.
